There's something about wearing cultured pearls that simply makes a woman feel good. Pearls are wonderful against the skin - so smooth, satiny, lustrous and sexy.

Pearls are special -- they're the world's oldest living gem -- created from living creatures like mussels and oysters.

Just like you, cultured pearls come in all sizes, shapes and colors - brace yourself for battleship steel, metallic black and shiny gray.

  • Freshwater: an economical choice, these are rice-shaped or spherical with colors of milky white, peach, pink and lavender
  • Akoya: usually used in necklaces, they have a shimmering tone, with rose, cream, gold and blue-gray shades
  • South Sea: these are expensive because they are so rare
  • Tahitian Black: large pearls and unique colors make this a top dollar choice
  • Mabe: large and grown in oyster shells, not inside the oyster body. Their half-sphere shape makes them popular in earrings, rings and brooches. Often less expensive.
  • Keshi: tiny pearls
  • Baroque: odd-shaped, but lustrous

Taking care of pearl jewelry

Treat your pearls gently.

Clean in mild soap and water when you take them off, and store in a chamois bag. They don't like chemicals, cosmetics, hair spray or perfume, so put your pearls on last. And here's a no-no … never clean cultured pearls in an ultrasonic cleaning machine
