Trusted (history and philosophy of science, Open U.) argues that inanimate matter is far more mysterious than common sense and science allow, and buttresses her view with western philosophical and scientific theories. She summarizes the three theories: corpuscular, which sees matter as composed of small material particles; non- material reality, in which the properties of matter are a consequence of immaterial forces that themselves comprise ultimate reality; and idealist, which claims that sensible objects and materials are but mental constructs. Those, she says, affect theories of the interaction of mind and matter and of conscious awareness. |
