Colorful examples of caves help show how different kinds are created, the rock
formations found inside, animal and plant life that live there, and how human beings used
caves for shelter and safety. Excerpt
from Caves:
Taken from Chapter 11: Mammoth Cave Over millions of years a steady trickle of
water had carved a large underground maze from a limestone region in Kentucky. The cave
system is called Mammoth Cave because of its enormous size. It is now part of a national
park. Mammoth Cave is the longest system of caves in the world, with a total mapped length
of 560 kilometers (347 miles). Some caverns are as big as New York's Grand Central
Station! Cave crickets, blindfish, and blind crayfish all live here. |
