The first volume of a major biography of German statesman Adenauer (1876-1967), translated from the original German edition of 1986 (Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt). The volume includes numerous letters, written by Adenauer in 1933/34, which reveal his plight after the Nazi takeover, and his own accounts of the war and its end in 1945. The author (Director of the Research Institute for Political Science and European Questions, U. of Cologne) also presents a detailed picture of Adenauer's rise to power in postwar Germany and his policies up to 1952. |
