North Carolina Folk Music
This show features traditional folk music from North Carolina played on the
dulcimer, guitar, banjo and fiddle. Students learn about the African,
Irish and English roots of the songs and instruments. Students participate
by singing, playing instruments in a "Jug Band" and adding their
own verses to some old time favorites like "Old Joe Clark."
A Song and A Dance
Students will dance a jig to an Irish tune played on the pennywhistle and
bohdran, use mouth and body percussion to play rhythms from the South
Pacific, participate in an Asian folk tale as they sing the part of the La
La Bird to the accompaniment of a wooden flute and an Appalachian
dulcimer, and learn a German folk dance guaranteed to bring a smile to
everyone's face.
The Guitar: Bach to Rock
The guitar is used to play many styles of music such as classical,
flamenco, blues, jazz, rock and pop. Students will hear all these styles;
from minuets on the classical guitar to "Johnny B. Goode" on the
electric.
